How to Pray (Namaz)

Salah is the second pillar of Islam and the first deed a person will be asked about on the Day of Judgement. This guide walks you through a complete 2-rak'ah Fajr prayer step by step, as commonly taught in Pakistan (Hanafi), with notes where other madhhabs differ. Make sure you have wudu, your body, clothes and place are clean, your 'awrah is covered, it is the correct time, and you face the Qiblah.

1

Intention (Niyyah) نیت

Stand facing the Qiblah with feet about four fingers apart, and make the intention in your heart for the specific prayer, e.g. 'I intend to pray two rak'ahs fard of Fajr for Allah, facing the Ka'bah' (adding 'behind this imam' if in congregation).

The intention is in the heart. Hanafi books consider saying it with the tongue (in any language) commendable to help concentration; many other scholars consider it unnecessary. Either way, no specific Arabic wording is required.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
2

Takbir al-Ihram (opening takbir)

Raise both hands so that the thumbs touch or come level with the earlobes, palms facing the Qiblah, and say 'Allahu Akbar'. Then fold the hands below the navel, placing the right hand over the left and holding the left wrist with the thumb and little finger of the right hand. Keep your eyes on the place of sajdah.

Allahu Akbar

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest.

Women in the Hanafi school raise hands to the shoulders and place them on the chest. Shafi'is and Hanbalis raise hands to the shoulders or ears and place them on the chest/above the navel; many Malikis leave the arms at the sides (sadl). All are practised by sound scholars.
Sahih Muslim 391; Sahih al-Bukhari 735
3

Thana (opening praise)

With hands folded, recite the Thana quietly. This is recited by the imam, the follower and the person praying alone.

Meaning: Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed is Your Name, exalted is Your Majesty, and there is no god besides You.

Shafi'is often recite 'Wajjahtu wajhiya…' or 'Allahumma ba'id bayni wa bayna khatayaya…' as the opening dua; all are authentic.
Sunan Abi Dawud 776; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 243
4

Ta'awwudh

Seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan quietly. In the Hanafi school the follower behind an imam does not recite this or anything after it in qiyam; he listens to the imam.

A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim.

Meaning: I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan, the accursed.

Qur'an 16:98
5

Tasmiyah

Say Bismillah quietly before Surah al-Fatiha.

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Shafi'is recite Bismillah aloud in loud prayers, as they count it a verse of al-Fatiha.
6

Surah al-Fatiha

Recite Surah al-Fatiha. In Fajr, Maghrib and 'Isha the imam recites aloud in the first two rak'ahs; a person praying alone may recite aloud or quietly. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book.'

Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin. Ar-Rahmanir-Rahim. Maliki yawmid-din. Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in. Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim. Siratal-ladhina an'amta 'alayhim, ghayril-maghdubi 'alayhim wa lad-dallin.

Meaning: All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgement. You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path, the path of those You have blessed, not of those who earned Your anger nor of those who went astray.

Hanafis: the follower stays silent behind the imam. Shafi'is: the follower recites al-Fatiha in every rak'ah. Malikis and Hanbalis: the follower listens in loud prayers and recites in silent ones.
Qur'an 1:1-7; Sahih al-Bukhari 756
7

Ameen آمین

After 'wa lad-dallin', say 'Ameen'. In the Hanafi school everyone, including the imam, says it quietly.

Ameen

Meaning: O Allah, accept.

Shafi'is and Hanbalis say Ameen aloud in loud prayers. Both practices are based on hadith.
Sahih al-Bukhari 780
8

Recite a Surah

Recite a surah or at least three short verses after al-Fatiha. For example, Surah al-Kafirun in the first rak'ah and Surah al-Ikhlas in the second (the Sunnah for the two Sunnah rak'ahs of Fajr). Recite surahs in the order of the Mushaf.

Qul ya ayyuhal-kafirun. La a'budu ma ta'budun. Wa la antum 'abiduna ma a'bud. Wa la ana 'abidum-ma 'abadtum. Wa la antum 'abiduna ma a'bud. Lakum dinukum wa liya din.

Meaning: Say: O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship, nor do you worship what I worship. Nor will I worship what you worship, nor will you worship what I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is mine.

Adding a surah in the first two rak'ahs of a fard prayer is wajib in the Hanafi school and Sunnah in the others.
Qur'an 109; Sahih Muslim 726
9

Ruku (bowing)

Saying 'Allahu Akbar', bow down. Grip the knees with fingers spread, keep the back straight and level with the head, arms away from the sides, and look at your feet. Say the tasbih at least three times (an odd number such as 3, 5 or 7 is preferred).

Subhana Rabbiyal-'Azim.

Meaning: Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.

Hanafis raise hands only at the opening takbir. Shafi'is and Hanbalis also raise hands before and after ruku (raf' al-yadayn); both are reported from the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions.
Sahih Muslim 772; Sunan Abi Dawud 869
10

Qawmah (standing after ruku)

Rise from ruku saying 'Sami'allahu liman hamidah' and stand fully upright with arms at the sides, calm for a moment, then say 'Rabbana lakal-hamd'. In the Hanafi school the imam says only the first phrase, the follower only the second, and a person praying alone says both.

Sami'allahu liman hamidah. Rabbana lakal-hamd.

Meaning: Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise.

Standing straight with calmness (ta'dil al-arkan) is required; rushing straight to sajdah spoils the prayer's quality and may invalidate it.
Sahih al-Bukhari 796; Sahih al-Bukhari 757
11

First Sajdah (prostration)

Saying 'Allahu Akbar', go down to sajdah: knees first, then hands, then nose and forehead. Place the face between the hands, fingers together pointing to the Qiblah, toes bent towards the Qiblah. Men keep the arms away from the sides and the belly away from the thighs. Say the tasbih at least three times.

Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.

Meaning: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

Seven body parts must touch the ground: forehead (with nose), both hands, both knees and the toes of both feet. Hanafi women make a compact sajdah with arms close to the body. Malikis and some Hanbalis place the hands before the knees.
Sahih al-Bukhari 812; Sahih Muslim 772
12

Jalsa (sitting between the two sajdahs)

Saying 'Allahu Akbar', rise and sit calmly: lay the left foot flat and sit on it, keep the right foot upright with toes towards the Qiblah, and place the hands on the thighs. You may recite the short dua.

Allahummaghfir li warhamni wahdini wa 'afini warzuqni.

Meaning: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being and provide for me.

Hanafi women sit with both feet out to the right side. 'Rabbighfir li' (My Lord, forgive me) is also reported.
Sunan Abi Dawud 850; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 284
13

Second Sajdah

Saying 'Allahu Akbar', go into the second sajdah exactly like the first and recite 'Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la' at least three times. This completes the first rak'ah.

Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.

Meaning: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

14

Second rak'ah

Saying 'Allahu Akbar', stand up for the second rak'ah, rising on the toes and using the knees without sitting first. Fold the hands, say Bismillah, recite al-Fatiha, Ameen and a surah (e.g. al-Ikhlas), then do ruku, qawmah and the two sajdahs exactly as in the first rak'ah. Thana and ta'awwudh are not repeated.

Qul huwallahu ahad. Allahus-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Meaning: Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him.

Shafi'is and Hanbalis (in one view) sit briefly (jalsat al-istirahah) before standing for the next rak'ah.
Qur'an 112
15

Qa'dah and Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyat)

After the second sajdah of the second rak'ah, sit as in jalsa with hands on the thighs and recite the Tashahhud. When you reach 'ash-hadu an la ilaha', make a circle with the thumb and middle finger, raise the index finger at 'la ilaha' and lower it at 'illallah', keeping the circle until the end.

Meaning: All compliments, prayers and pure words are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

This is the Tashahhud of Ibn Mas'ud used by Hanafis and Hanbalis; Shafi'is use the similar wording of Ibn 'Abbas and Malikis that of 'Umar. In the final sitting Shafi'is and Hanbalis sit in tawarruk (left hip on the ground). Some scholars keep the finger pointed or move it gently.
Sahih al-Bukhari 831; Sahih Muslim 402
16

Durood Ibrahimi

In the final sitting, after the Tashahhud, recite Durood Ibrahimi, the salutation the Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions.

Meaning: O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent mercy upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3370; Sahih Muslim 406
17

Dua after Durood

After the Durood, recite a dua from the Qur'an or Sunnah. Abu Bakr (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ for a dua to say in his prayer and was taught this one. Many Pakistani books also teach the Qur'anic dua 'Rabbij-'alni muqimas-salati…' (see note).

Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indika, warhamni, innaka antal-Ghafurur-Rahim.

Meaning: O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You, so grant me forgiveness from Yourself and have mercy on me. Indeed, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Alternative (Qur'an 14:40–41): رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي، رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ، رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ — 'My Lord, make me one who establishes prayer, and from my descendants. Our Lord, accept my supplication. Our Lord, forgive me, my parents and the believers on the Day the account is established.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 834; Sahih Muslim 2705
18

Salam (ending the prayer)

Turn the face to the right saying 'As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah', then to the left saying the same. The prayer is now complete. Afterwards it is Sunnah to say 'Astaghfirullah' three times and remember Allah.

As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah.

Meaning: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.

Malikis commonly give one salam to the front/right; others give two.

Praying 3 and 4 rak'ahs

• 2 rak'ahs (Fajr): sit once after the 2nd rak'ah → Tashahhud, Durood, Dua, Salam. • 3 rak'ahs (Maghrib, Witr): after the 2nd rak'ah sit for Tashahhud only (first qa'dah), then stand with 'Allahu Akbar' for the 3rd rak'ah; after the 3rd rak'ah sit for the final qa'dah → Tashahhud, Durood, Dua, Salam. • 4 rak'ahs (Zuhr, 'Asr, 'Isha): first qa'dah after the 2nd rak'ah with Tashahhud only, stand for the 3rd and 4th rak'ahs, final qa'dah after the 4th. • In the 3rd and 4th rak'ahs of a FARD prayer recite only al-Fatiha (no surah), quietly. In Sunnah, Nafl and Witr prayers recite al-Fatiha plus a surah in every rak'ah.

Forgetting the first qa'dah and standing up requires Sajdah Sahw (see that guide). In Hanafi fiqh, in a 4-rak'ah Sunnah mu'akkadah (e.g. before Zuhr) one does not recite Durood in the first qa'dah.

Rak'ahs of the five daily prayers

As commonly taught in Pakistan (Hanafi): • Fajr: 2 Sunnah mu'akkadah + 2 Fard • Zuhr: 4 Sunnah mu'akkadah + 4 Fard + 2 Sunnah mu'akkadah + 2 Nafl • 'Asr: 4 Sunnah ghayr mu'akkadah + 4 Fard • Maghrib: 3 Fard + 2 Sunnah mu'akkadah + 2 Nafl • 'Isha: 4 Sunnah ghayr mu'akkadah + 4 Fard + 2 Sunnah mu'akkadah + 2 Nafl + 3 Witr (wajib) + 2 Nafl • Jumu'ah: 4 Sunnah + 2 Fard + 4 Sunnah + 2 Sunnah + 2 Nafl Total fard each day: 17 rak'ahs.

The 17 fard rak'ahs are agreed upon by all. Other schools count the Sunnahs differently: e.g. Shafi'is and Hanbalis emphasise 2 (or 4) before Zuhr and 2 after, and regard Witr as a strongly emphasised Sunnah that may be 1, 3 or more rak'ahs. Nafl prayers are optional and rewarding.
