Witr Prayer and Dua Qunoot

Witr is the odd-numbered prayer prayed after 'Isha and before Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ never left it, whether at home or travelling. In the Hanafi school Witr is wajib and consists of three rak'ahs with one salam, with Dua Qunoot recited in the third rak'ah before ruku.

1

Time and status

The time for Witr begins after the 'Isha fard and lasts until Fajr begins. If you are confident of waking for Tahajjud, praying it at the end of the night is better; otherwise pray it after 'Isha.

Hanafis hold Witr to be wajib (missed Witr must be made up). The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools hold it to be a strongly emphasised Sunnah.
Sahih Muslim 755; Sunan Abi Dawud 1419

First two rak'ahs

Make the intention for three rak'ahs of Witr wajib. Pray the first two rak'ahs like any prayer, reciting al-Fatiha and a surah in each, then sit after the second rak'ah and recite only the Tashahhud. Stand up for the third rak'ah saying 'Allahu Akbar'.

It is Sunnah to recite Surah al-A'la, al-Kafirun and al-Ikhlas in the three rak'ahs respectively.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1423; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 462

Third rak'ah: takbir before Qunoot

In the third rak'ah recite al-Fatiha and a surah. Then, before going into ruku, raise the hands to the ears saying 'Allahu Akbar' as at the opening, fold them again below the navel, and recite Dua Qunoot quietly.

Allahu Akbar

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest.

Dua Qunoot (Hanafi)

This is the Qunoot recited by Hanafis throughout the year in Witr, narrated from 'Umar (RA) and other Companions, and found in Pakistani namaz books.

Meaning: O Allah, we seek Your help and Your forgiveness, we believe in You and rely on You, and we praise You with all good. We thank You and are not ungrateful to You, and we cast off and leave whoever disobeys You. O Allah, You alone we worship, to You we pray and prostrate, towards You we strive and hasten. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment; surely Your punishment will overtake the disbelievers.

If you have not yet memorised Qunoot, you may recite 'Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar', or 'Allahummaghfir li' three times, until you learn it.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah; al-Bayhaqi, as-Sunan al-Kubra (from 'Umar)

Dua Qunoot (Allahumma-hdini)

This Qunoot was taught by the Prophet ﷺ to his grandson al-Hasan (RA) to say in Witr. Shafi'is and Hanbalis use it in Witr (and Shafi'is also in Fajr); Hanafis may also recite it, alone or together with the first.

Meaning: O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For You decree and none decrees over You, and the one You befriend is never humiliated. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted.

Who uses which: Hanafis recite 'Allahumma inna nasta'inuka' before ruku all year. Shafi'is recite 'Allahumma-hdini' after ruku in Witr during the second half of Ramadan and in Fajr. Hanbalis recite it after ruku in Witr all year. Malikis perform Qunoot mainly in Fajr. Some narrations add 'wa la ya'izzu man 'adayt'.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1425; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 464; Sunan an-Nasa'i 1745

Complete the prayer

After Qunoot, say 'Allahu Akbar' and go into ruku, then complete the rak'ah and the final sitting with Tashahhud, Durood, Dua and Salam. If you forgot Qunoot and remembered in ruku, do not go back; perform Sajdah Sahw at the end.

In Ramadan, Witr is prayed in congregation after Taraweeh. Other schools may pray Witr as 2 + 1 with separate salams, or as a single rak'ah.
