Prophet Sulaiman (AS) – A Kingdom Like No Other

Stories of the Prophets

Sulaiman (AS) was given wisdom, a unique kingdom, command over the wind and jinn, and the speech of birds. He remained grateful, and invited the Queen of Saba to submit to Allah.

Sulaiman (AS) inherited prophethood and kingship from his father Dawud (AS) (Quran 27:16). From a young age Allah gave him deep understanding, as in the case of the field grazed by sheep (Quran 21:78-79). The Prophet ﷺ narrated that two women each had a son; a wolf took one of the boys, and each woman claimed the remaining child. Dawud judged in favour of the older woman. Sulaiman called for a knife, saying he would divide the child between them. The younger woman cried out that he should not, and that the child was the other's. Sulaiman then gave the child to her, recognising the true mother by her mercy (Sahih al-Bukhari 3427; Sahih Muslim 1720).

Sulaiman asked Allah for a kingdom that would not befit anyone after him, and Allah granted it (Quran 38:35). The wind was made subject to him: its morning course was a month's journey and its evening course a month's journey (Quran 34:12). Jinn worked for him, building whatever he wished – places of worship, statues, basins as large as reservoirs and fixed cauldrons (Quran 34:12-13; 38:37-38). He was taught the speech of birds (Quran 27:16).

Once, as Sulaiman marched with his army of jinn, men and birds, they came to the valley of the ants. An ant called out to the others to enter their homes so that Sulaiman and his soldiers would not crush them without realising. Sulaiman smiled at her words and prayed that Allah inspire him to be grateful for His favours on him and his parents, and to do righteous deeds that please Him (Quran 27:17-19).

Inspecting the birds, he noticed the hoopoe (hudhud) was missing. It soon returned with news of the kingdom of Saba (Sheba), ruled by a woman with a magnificent throne, whose people prostrated to the sun instead of Allah (Quran 27:20-26). Sulaiman sent a letter beginning in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, inviting them not to be arrogant but to come in submission (Quran 27:28-31). The queen consulted her advisers and sent a gift; Sulaiman returned it, saying that what Allah had given him was better (Quran 27:32-37). He then asked who could bring her throne. One who had knowledge from the Scripture brought it in the blink of an eye, and Sulaiman said this was from the favour of his Lord, to test whether he would be grateful (Quran 27:38-40). When the queen arrived and mistook a floor of glass for water, she realised the greatness of what she saw and submitted with Sulaiman to Allah, Lord of the worlds (Quran 27:41-44). The name Bilqis comes from historical reports, not from the Quran.

The Quran also clears Sulaiman of the accusation that he practised magic: he did not disbelieve; it was the devils who disbelieved and taught people magic (Quran 2:102).

Even his death was a sign. He died while leaning on his staff, and the jinn kept working, unaware, until a creature of the earth gnawed through the staff and he fell. Then the jinn realised that if they had known the unseen, they would not have stayed in humiliating labour (Quran 34:14).

Lessons

  • Power and wealth are tests of gratitude.
  • Wisdom and mercy together make for just judgement.
  • Care even for the smallest creatures, like the ant.
  • Invite others to Allah with dignity, not with greed for their wealth.
  • Only Allah knows the unseen – not jinn, nor anyone else.
