Prophet Dawud (AS) – King, Prophet and Worshipper

Stories of the Prophets

Dawud (AS) defeated Jalut (Goliath), was given kingship, wisdom and the Zabur, and was known for his just judgement, his beautiful glorification of Allah, and his constant worship.

Dawud (AS) first appears in the Quran as a young soldier in the army of Talut (Saul), the king Allah appointed over the Children of Israel. When they faced the army of Jalut (Goliath), a small band of believers prayed for patience and firm feet, knowing that many a small group has overcome a large one by Allah's permission. Dawud killed Jalut, and Allah gave him kingship and wisdom and taught him what He willed (Quran 2:246-251).

Allah gave Dawud a scripture, the Zabur (Psalms) (Quran 4:163; 17:55). The mountains and the birds were made to glorify Allah along with him, evening and morning (Quran 34:10; 38:18-19). Allah softened iron for him and taught him to make coats of mail with well-measured links, to protect people in battle (Quran 34:10-11; 21:80). The Prophet ﷺ said that no one has eaten better food than what he earns with his own hands, and that Dawud used to eat from the earnings of his own hands (Sahih al-Bukhari 2072).

Allah strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and decisive speech (Quran 38:20). He made him a khalifah on earth and commanded him to judge between people with truth and not follow desire (Quran 38:26). The Quran tells how two litigants climbed over the wall of his place of worship, startling him. One complained that his brother, who had ninety-nine ewes, was demanding his only one. Dawud judged the case, then realised that it had been a test for him; he sought his Lord's forgiveness, fell down bowing and turned to Him in repentance, and Allah forgave him (Quran 38:21-25). The Quran does not say what the test concerned. Scholars have rejected the Isra'iliyyat story that attributes a grave sin to him, as it is unworthy of a prophet.

In another case, sheep had strayed at night into someone's field and grazed it. Dawud and his son Sulaiman both judged the matter, and Allah gave Sulaiman the better understanding of that case, while giving both of them wisdom and knowledge (Quran 21:78-79).

Dawud (AS) was known for his devotion. The Prophet ﷺ said that the most beloved prayer to Allah is the prayer of Dawud and the most beloved fasting is the fasting of Dawud: he slept half the night, prayed for a third of it and slept for a sixth, and he fasted one day and did not fast the next (Sahih al-Bukhari 1131). Allah describes him as a man of strength who constantly turned back to Him (Quran 38:17).

Lessons

  • Victory comes from Allah, not from numbers.
  • Honest work with one's own hands is honourable, even for a king.
  • Rulers must judge with justice and not follow their desires.
  • Balance in worship – praying, fasting and resting – is beloved to Allah.
  • When tested, turn quickly to Allah in repentance.
