Funeral Prayer (Salat al-Janazah) نمازِ جنازہ کا طریقہ
Salat al-Janazah is a prayer of supplication for a deceased Muslim. It is fard kifayah: if some Muslims perform it, the obligation is lifted from the rest. It is prayed standing, with four takbirs, without ruku or sajdah. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever attends a funeral until the prayer is offered earns a qirat of reward, like a mountain.
نمازِ جنازہ فوت شدہ مسلمان کے لیے دعا کی نماز ہے۔ یہ فرضِ کفایہ ہے: اگر کچھ مسلمان ادا کر لیں تو باقیوں سے فرض ساقط ہو جاتا ہے۔ یہ کھڑے ہو کر چار تکبیروں کے ساتھ پڑھی جاتی ہے، اس میں رکوع اور سجدہ نہیں۔ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا کہ جو جنازے میں نماز تک شریک رہے اسے ایک قیراط ثواب ملتا ہے جو پہاڑ کے برابر ہے۔

Before the prayerنماز سے پہلے
The body is washed (ghusl), wrapped in the kafan and placed in front of the imam. Those praying need wudu and face the Qiblah. Form an odd number of rows if possible. The imam stands level with the chest of the deceased.
میت کو غسل دے کر کفن پہنایا جاتا ہے اور امام کے سامنے رکھا جاتا ہے۔ نمازیوں کا باوضو اور قبلہ رخ ہونا ضروری ہے۔ ممکن ہو تو صفیں طاق رکھیں۔ امام میت کے سینے کے سامنے کھڑا ہو۔
Hanafi: imam stands at the chest for both male and female. Shafi'is and Hanbalis: at the head of a man and the middle of a woman.
حنفی: مرد اور عورت دونوں کے لیے امام سینے کے مقابل کھڑا ہو۔ شافعی اور حنبلی: مرد کے سر اور عورت کے درمیان کے مقابل۔

Intentionنیت
Intend: 'I am praying the funeral prayer with four takbirs for Allah, as a dua for this deceased, behind this imam.' Hanafis say the prayer is for Allah and the dua is for the deceased.
نیت کریں: «میں نیت کرتا ہوں نمازِ جنازہ کی چار تکبیروں کے ساتھ، ثناء اللہ کے لیے، درود نبی ﷺ کے لیے اور دعا اس میت کے لیے، پیچھے اس امام کے۔»

First takbir and Thanaپہلی تکبیر اور ثناء
Raise the hands to the ears saying 'Allahu Akbar', fold them below the navel, and recite Thana quietly, adding 'wa jalla thana'uk'.
کانوں تک ہاتھ اٹھا کر «اللہ اکبر» کہیں، ناف کے نیچے ہاتھ باندھ لیں اور آہستہ سے ثناء پڑھیں جس میں «وجل ثناؤک» کا اضافہ ہو۔
Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, wa tabarakasmuka, wa ta'ala jadduka, wa jalla thana'uka, wa la ilaha ghayruk.
Meaning: Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed is Your Name, exalted is Your Majesty, sublime is Your praise, and there is no god besides You.
اے اللہ! تو پاک ہے، اور تیری ہی تعریف ہے، تیرا نام برکت والا ہے، تیری شان بلند ہے، تیری ثناء بڑی ہے، اور تیرے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں۔
Shafi'is and Hanbalis recite Surah al-Fatiha after the first takbir instead, following Ibn 'Abbas (RA). Hanafis raise the hands only at the first takbir; others raise them at every takbir.
شافعی اور حنبلی حضرت ابنِ عباسؓ کی پیروی میں پہلی تکبیر کے بعد سورۃ الفاتحہ پڑھتے ہیں۔ حنفی صرف پہلی تکبیر پر ہاتھ اٹھاتے ہیں؛ دیگر ہر تکبیر پر اٹھاتے ہیں۔

Second takbir and Duroodدوسری تکبیر اور درود
Say 'Allahu Akbar' without raising the hands, and recite Durood Ibrahimi, the same as in Salah.
ہاتھ اٹھائے بغیر «اللہ اکبر» کہیں اور نماز والا درودِ ابراہیمی پڑھیں۔
Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid.
Meaning: O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent mercy upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.
اے اللہ! محمد ﷺ اور آلِ محمد پر رحمت نازل فرما، جیسے تو نے ابراہیمؑ اور آلِ ابراہیم پر رحمت نازل فرمائی، بے شک تو تعریف والا، بزرگی والا ہے۔ اے اللہ! محمد ﷺ اور آلِ محمد پر برکت نازل فرما، جیسے تو نے ابراہیمؑ اور آلِ ابراہیم پر برکت نازل فرمائی، بے شک تو تعریف والا، بزرگی والا ہے۔

Third takbir: dua for an adult (male)تیسری تکبیر: بالغ مرد کے لیے دعا
Say 'Allahu Akbar' and recite the dua for the deceased. This dua is recited for adult men and women alike.
«اللہ اکبر» کہہ کر میت کے لیے دعا پڑھیں۔ یہ دعا بالغ مرد اور عورت دونوں کے لیے پڑھی جاتی ہے۔
Allahummaghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'alal-iman.
Meaning: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever of us You take in death, take him upon faith.
اے اللہ! ہمارے زندوں اور مُردوں کو، حاضر اور غائب کو، چھوٹوں اور بڑوں کو، مردوں اور عورتوں کو بخش دے۔ اے اللہ! ہم میں سے جسے تو زندہ رکھے اسے اسلام پر زندہ رکھ، اور جسے موت دے اسے ایمان پر موت دے۔
Another authentic dua (male form): اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ — 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, give him well-being, pardon him, honour his reception and widen his entry' (Sahih Muslim 963). If you do not know any dua, any dua for forgiveness suffices.
ایک اور صحیح دعا (مذکر): اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ — «اے اللہ! اسے بخش دے، اس پر رحم فرما، اسے عافیت دے، اسے معاف فرما، اس کی مہمانی عزت والی کر اور اس کے داخل ہونے کی جگہ کشادہ کر» (صحیح مسلم ۹۶۳)۔ اگر کوئی دعا یاد نہ ہو تو مغفرت کی کوئی بھی دعا کافی ہے۔

Third takbir: dua for an adult (female)تیسری تکبیر: بالغ عورت کے لیے دعا
For an adult woman the same dua as above is recited ('Allahummaghfir li-hayyina…'), since it is a general dua. If you add the dua from Sahih Muslim, use the feminine pronouns as shown here.
بالغ عورت کے لیے بھی اوپر والی دعا («اللہم اغفر لحینا…») ہی پڑھی جاتی ہے کیونکہ یہ عمومی دعا ہے۔ اگر صحیح مسلم والی دعا ساتھ پڑھیں تو یہاں دیے گئے مؤنث صیغے استعمال کریں۔
Allahummaghfir laha warhamha, wa 'afiha wa'fu 'anha, wa akrim nuzulaha, wa wassi' mudkhalaha.
Meaning: O Allah, forgive her, have mercy on her, give her well-being, pardon her, honour her reception and widen her entry.
اے اللہ! اسے بخش دے، اس پر رحم فرما، اسے عافیت دے، اسے معاف فرما، اس کی مہمانی عزت والی کر اور اس کے داخل ہونے کی جگہ کشادہ کر۔

Third takbir: dua for a childتیسری تکبیر: نابالغ بچے/بچی کے لیے دعا
For a child who died before puberty, recite this dua instead, asking that the child be a forerunner and intercessor for the parents. For a boy say the first version; for a girl the second.
نابالغ بچے کے جنازے میں یہ دعا پڑھیں جس میں بچے کو والدین کے لیے پیش رو اور سفارشی بنانے کی درخواست ہے۔ لڑکے کے لیے پہلی اور لڑکی کے لیے دوسری دعا پڑھیں۔
(Boy) Allahummaj'alhu lana faratan, waj'alhu lana ajran wa dhukhran, waj'alhu lana shafi'an wa mushaffa'a.
(Girl) Allahummaj'alha lana faratan, waj'alha lana ajran wa dhukhran, waj'alha lana shafi'atan wa mushaffa'ah.
Meaning: O Allah, make him (her) a forerunner for us, make him (her) a reward and a treasure for us, and make him (her) an intercessor for us whose intercession is accepted.
اے اللہ! اس بچے (بچی) کو ہمارے لیے آگے جا کر انتظام کرنے والا بنا، اسے ہمارے لیے اجر اور ذخیرہ بنا، اور اسے ہمارے لیے سفارش کرنے والا اور جس کی سفارش قبول ہو بنا۔

Fourth takbir and Salamچوتھی تکبیر اور سلام
Say 'Allahu Akbar' a fourth time, then give salam to the right and to the left, lowering the hands. Nothing is recited after the fourth takbir in the Hanafi school.
چوتھی بار «اللہ اکبر» کہیں، پھر ہاتھ چھوڑتے ہوئے دائیں اور بائیں سلام پھیر دیں۔ حنفی مسلک میں چوتھی تکبیر کے بعد کچھ نہیں پڑھا جاتا۔
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ
As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah.
Meaning: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.
تم پر سلامتی ہو اور اللہ کی رحمت۔
Some schools give only one salam; Hanbalis allow a short dua after the fourth takbir. A latecomer joins at the next takbir and completes the missed takbirs after the imam's salam, before the bier is lifted.
بعض مسالک ایک ہی سلام پھیرتے ہیں؛ حنبلی چوتھی تکبیر کے بعد مختصر دعا کی اجازت دیتے ہیں۔ دیر سے آنے والا اگلی تکبیر کے ساتھ شامل ہو اور امام کے سلام کے بعد جنازہ اٹھائے جانے سے پہلے چھوٹی ہوئی تکبیریں پوری کرے۔

After the prayerنماز کے بعد
Accompany the funeral to the graveyard if you can. When placing the body in the grave, say 'Bismillahi wa 'ala millati Rasulillah'. After burial, stand at the grave and ask Allah to keep the deceased firm, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed.
ممکن ہو تو جنازے کے ساتھ قبرستان جائیں۔ میت کو قبر میں اتارتے وقت «بسم اللہ وعلی ملۃ رسول اللہ» کہیں۔ تدفین کے بعد قبر پر کھڑے ہو کر میت کے لیے ثابت قدمی کی دعا کریں، جیسا کہ نبی ﷺ نے حکم دیا۔
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَىٰ مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
Bismillahi wa 'ala millati Rasulillah.
Meaning: In the name of Allah and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah.
اللہ کے نام سے اور رسول اللہ ﷺ کے طریقے پر۔
