Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj: The Night Journey and Ascension

Seerah

In a single night Allah took the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah to Jerusalem and then through the heavens, where the five daily prayers were made obligatory.

After the Year of Sorrow and the pain of Ta'if, Allah honoured His Messenger ﷺ with a journey unlike any other. It took place in Makkah, before the Hijrah; the exact date is not established with certainty, and the scholars hold different opinions about the month and year.

Allah says: "Exalted is He who took His servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing" (17:1).

The Prophet ﷺ described how Jibril came to him, and his chest was opened and washed with Zamzam water, then filled with wisdom and faith. He was brought al-Buraq, a white animal larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, whose stride reached as far as its sight. He rode it to Bayt al-Maqdis in Jerusalem, where he tied it, and he led the prophets in prayer there.

Then he ascended with Jibril through the heavens. At each heaven Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and the Prophet ﷺ was welcomed. In the first heaven he met Adam (AS); in the second, Yahya and Isa (AS); in the third, Yusuf (AS); in the fourth, Idris (AS); in the fifth, Harun (AS); in the sixth, Musa (AS); and in the seventh, Ibrahim (AS), leaning against al-Bayt al-Ma'mur, which seventy thousand angels enter every day, never to return. Each greeted him: "Welcome to the righteous brother," or, from Adam and Ibrahim, "the righteous son."

He was taken up to Sidrat al-Muntaha, the Lote Tree of the farthest boundary. The Quran says: "And he certainly saw him in another descent, at the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary, near which is the Garden of Refuge... He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord" (53:13-18).

There Allah made fifty prayers a day obligatory upon his Ummah. On his way down, Musa (AS) asked him what had been prescribed, and said: "Your Ummah will not be able to bear it. Go back to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it." The Prophet ﷺ went back several times, and the number was reduced until it became five. Allah declared that they are five in number but fifty in reward.

In the morning the Prophet ﷺ told the people of Makkah. Many mocked him, and some challenged him to describe Jerusalem, which they knew he had never visited before. He said: "Allah raised Bayt al-Maqdis before me, and I began describing it to them while looking at it." It is reported in the seerah that when the idolaters went to Abu Bakr (RA), he said: "If he said it, then he has spoken the truth," and that this is one reason he was called as-Siddiq.

The gift of this night is with us every day: the five daily prayers, the believer's own ascent to meet his Lord.

Lessons

  • Prayer is a gift given directly in the heavens; guard it carefully.
  • After hardship Allah sends honour and comfort to His servants.
  • Allah's mercy lightens burdens: five prayers with the reward of fifty.
  • All the prophets brought one message, and they welcomed the final Messenger.
  • Believe in the unseen that Allah and His Messenger have told us.
