In 10 AH the Prophet ﷺ performed his only Hajj and addressed the believers at Arafah, declaring the sanctity of life, property and honour, and leaving them the Book of Allah.
In Dhul-Qa'dah of 10 AH (632 CE), the Prophet ﷺ announced that he would perform Hajj. It was the only Hajj he performed after the Hijrah. People came from all over Arabia to accompany him; Jabir (RA) said that as far as his eyes could see, in every direction, there were people riding and walking. The seerah books report that more than a hundred thousand took part. He told them: "Take your rites from me, for I do not know whether I will perform Hajj after this year of mine."
On the Day of Arafah, the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, he addressed the people from his camel al-Qaswa in the valley of Uranah. Jabir (RA) preserved his words:
"Your blood and your property are sacred to you, as sacred as this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Behold, everything from the affairs of Jahiliyyah is abolished under my feet. The blood feuds of Jahiliyyah are abolished, and the first claim of blood I abolish is our own. The usury of Jahiliyyah is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is that of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib; it is abolished entirely. Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah. ... I have left among you something which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah. And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?"
They said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled your duty and given sincere counsel." He raised his index finger towards the sky, then pointed it at the people, saying three times: "O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness."
On that same day, a Friday, Allah revealed: "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion" (5:3).
In the days that followed at Mina, he addressed them again. He reminded them that their blood, wealth and honour were sacred to one another, and warned: "Do not turn back after me into disbelievers, striking the necks of one another." He commanded: "Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent, for perhaps the one to whom it is conveyed will understand it better than the one who heard it." In a narration in Musnad Ahmad, he declared: "O people, your Lord is one, and your father is one. There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab, nor of a white person over a black person, nor of a black person over a white person, except by taqwa." This echoes the Quran: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you" (49:13).
The companions understood they were hearing a farewell. About three months later, in Rabi' al-Awwal of 11 AH, the Prophet ﷺ passed away in Madinah. His final message remains a charter of human dignity, justice and faith for every generation of Muslims.
