Uthman ibn Affan (RA): The Possessor of Two Lights

Sahaba

A wealthy, generous and deeply modest companion who bought the well of Rumah for the Muslims, equipped the army of Tabuk and united the Ummah on one written text of the Quran.

Uthman ibn Affan (RA), of the Umayyad clan of Quraysh, was a wealthy, generous and exceptionally modest merchant. The seerah books report that he accepted Islam early through the invitation of Abu Bakr (RA), and he endured hardship from his own relatives for his faith. He was among those who emigrated to Abyssinia to escape persecution, and later to Madinah.

He married Ruqayyah (RA), the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, and after her death the Prophet ﷺ married him to another daughter, Umm Kulthum (RA). For this reason he is known as Dhun-Nurayn, "the possessor of the two lights". Ruqayyah was gravely ill at the time of Badr, so the Prophet ﷺ told Uthman to stay behind and nurse her, and counted him among the people of Badr in reward and share.

His modesty (haya) was famous. Aishah (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ once gathered his garment properly when Uthman came in, and explained: "Should I not feel shy of a man before whom the angels feel shy?"

His wealth was always at the service of the believers. When the Muslims arrived in Madinah, sweet drinking water was scarce, and the well of Rumah belonged to a man who sold its water. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever acquires the well of Rumah will have Paradise." Uthman bought it and made it free for all Muslims. Later, when the army was being prepared for the difficult expedition of Tabuk in 9 AH, in a season of heat and hardship, Uthman equipped a large part of it from his own wealth. Tirmidhi reports that after his donation the Prophet ﷺ said: "Nothing that Uthman does after today will harm him."

At Hudaybiyyah in 6 AH, the Prophet ﷺ sent Uthman to Makkah as his envoy. When a rumour spread that he had been killed, the companions gave the Pledge of Ridwan under the tree. The Prophet ﷺ held up his right hand and said, "This is the hand of Uthman," and struck it on his other hand, giving the pledge on his behalf.

Uthman (RA) became the third Caliph in 24 AH. One of his greatest services was uniting the Ummah on one written text of the Quran. When differences in recitation began to cause disputes among Muslims in distant lands, he had copies made from the compilation prepared in the time of Abu Bakr (RA) and sent them to the major cities. The copies of the Quran read across the world today follow that standard written text.

In 35 AH rebels besieged his house in Madinah. He refused to let the companions shed blood in his defence, and he was martyred in his home; it is reported that he was reciting the Quran at the time. He met Allah as he had lived: patient, generous and modest.

Lessons

  • Modesty (haya) is a branch of faith and a beautiful quality.
  • Wealth is a trust; its best use is in serving people for Allah's sake.
  • Charity that keeps benefiting people (sadaqah jariyah) keeps earning reward.
  • Preserving the Quran and the unity of the Ummah is a great service.
  • Patience in trials and refusing to spread bloodshed is true nobility.
