A Persian who left his home, his father's religion and his comfort to search for the truth, passed through slavery, and found it at the hands of the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah.
Salman al-Farisi (RA) was born in Persia, in a village near Isfahan. His father was a wealthy landowner and a devoted Zoroastrian, and Salman was given the duty of keeping the sacred fire burning. Salman himself told the story of his long search for the truth, in a narration recorded by Imam Ahmad and graded hasan by scholars.
One day, passing a church, he heard Christians praying and was drawn to their worship; he felt it was better than the religion he followed. His father, alarmed, chained him at home, but Salman escaped with a caravan to Syria. There he served a bishop, and after him a series of devout men of worship in Mosul, Nusaybin and Amuriyah. Each, at the time of death, directed him to another. The last of them told him: "The time has come for a prophet to appear with the religion of Ibrahim. He will emigrate to a land of date palms between two lava plains. He eats from a gift but does not eat charity, and between his shoulders is the seal of prophethood."
Salman paid a group of Arab merchants to take him to Arabia, but they betrayed him and sold him as a slave. In time he was bought by a man of the Banu Qurayzah and brought to Yathrib. When he saw its palm trees, he recognised the land that had been described to him. Salman later said that he passed from one master to another more than ten times.
When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, Salman went to test the signs. He brought some food as charity; the Prophet ﷺ told his companions to eat but did not eat himself. Later he brought food as a gift, and the Prophet ﷺ ate from it with them. Then he saw the seal of prophethood between his shoulders, and he embraced Islam, weeping.
Because he was a slave, he missed Badr and Uhud. The Prophet ﷺ told him to agree with his master to buy his freedom. The price was to plant three hundred palm saplings and pay a quantity of gold. The Prophet ﷺ and the companions helped him, the Prophet ﷺ planting the saplings with his own hands, and Salman was freed.
In 5 AH, when the confederate armies marched on Madinah, the seerah books report that it was Salman who advised digging a trench, a defence he knew from Persia, and the Muslims followed his plan.
The Prophet ﷺ honoured him greatly. When Surah al-Jumu'ah was revealed with the words "and others of them who have not yet joined them" (62:3), the Prophet ﷺ placed his hand on Salman and said: "Even if faith were at the Pleiades, men from these people would reach it." Salman once advised his brother in Islam, Abu ad-Darda (RA): "Your Lord has a right over you, your own self has a right over you, and your family has a right over you, so give each its due." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Salman has spoken the truth."
Salman later served as governor of al-Mada'in in Iraq, where he is reported to have lived simply, earning his living with his own hands. He died there during the caliphate of Uthman (RA).
