Yahya (AS), the miracle son of Zakariya, was given wisdom as a child, was pure, devout and dutiful to his parents, and confirmed the coming of Isa (AS).
Yahya (AS), known in Christian tradition as John the Baptist, was the son granted to Zakariya (AS) in his old age in answer to his prayer. Allah Himself chose his name, and said that He had not given that name to anyone before him (Quran 19:7).
Allah commanded him to hold firmly to the Scripture, and gave him wisdom while he was still a child (Quran 19:12). Allah also gave him tenderness from Himself and purity, and he was mindful of Allah. He was dutiful to his parents and was neither arrogant nor disobedient (Quran 19:13-14). The angels described him as one who would confirm a word from Allah – meaning Isa (AS) – and as a noble leader, chaste, and a prophet from among the righteous (Quran 3:39).
Allah honoured him with a special greeting: peace be upon him on the day he was born, the day he dies and the day he is raised alive (Quran 19:15). Isa (AS) later speaks a similar greeting about himself (Quran 19:33).
Yahya and Isa (AS) were related through their mothers. During the Mi'raj the Prophet ﷺ met them together in the second heaven and described them as the two cousins on the maternal side (Sahih al-Bukhari 3207; Sahih Muslim 162).
The Prophet ﷺ told that Allah commanded Yahya son of Zakariya with five things, to act upon them and to command the Children of Israel to act upon them: to worship Allah alone without partners, to pray, to fast, to give charity and to remember Allah much. Yahya gathered the people in Jerusalem and conveyed these commands (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2863).
The Quran does not describe how his life ended. Historians and Christian sources mention that he was killed unjustly by a ruler of his time. The Quran speaks in general of those among the Children of Israel who killed prophets without right (Quran 3:21), but the detailed accounts of Yahya's death come from historical reports rather than the Quran or sahih hadith.
