Hud (AS) warned the mighty and arrogant people of 'Ad to worship Allah alone. They mocked him and were destroyed by a furious wind, while Hud and the believers were saved.
After the Flood, people multiplied again. Among them were the people of 'Ad, who lived in al-Ahqaf, the region of sand dunes in southern Arabia (Quran 46:21). Allah made them successors after the people of Nuh and increased them in stature and strength (Quran 7:69). They built lofty landmarks on every high place for show and strong fortresses as if they would live forever (Quran 26:128-129). The Quran mentions 'Iram, the city of lofty pillars', unmatched in the land (Quran 89:6-8).
But they grew arrogant, asking who could be greater than them in strength, forgetting that Allah who created them is far greater in strength (Quran 41:15). Allah sent to them one of their own, their brother Hud (AS), who called them to worship Allah alone, for they had no god but Him (Quran 11:50). He asked no payment from them (Quran 11:51). He urged them to seek forgiveness, so that Allah would send abundant rain and add strength to their strength (Quran 11:52), and reminded them of the cattle, children, gardens and springs Allah had given them (Quran 26:132-134).
The chiefs called him foolish and a liar (Quran 7:66). They said he had brought no clear proof, they would not abandon their gods on his word, and that one of their gods must have struck him with madness (Quran 11:53-54). Hud (AS) answered with remarkable courage. He called Allah to witness that he was free of their idols, and challenged them all to plot against him without delay, because he had put his trust in Allah, his Lord and theirs; there is no living creature except that Allah holds it by its forelock (Quran 11:54-56).
They even challenged him to bring the punishment he warned about (Quran 46:22). When they saw a cloud approaching their valleys, they rejoiced, thinking it would bring rain. But it was what they had sought to hasten: a wind carrying a painful punishment, destroying everything by the command of its Lord, so that nothing could be seen except their dwellings (Quran 46:24-25). Allah sent upon them a furious, roaring wind for seven nights and eight days without pause, and the people lay fallen like hollow trunks of palm trees (Quran 69:6-8). Allah saved Hud and those who believed with him by His mercy (Quran 11:58).
The Prophet ﷺ would become visibly anxious when he saw strong wind or gathering clouds, and he would ask Allah for its good and seek refuge from its harm. When Aisha (RA) asked him about this, he explained that he feared it might be like the cloud the people of 'Ad saw and thought would bring them rain (Sahih Muslim 899). He also said that he was given victory by the east wind, and 'Ad were destroyed by the west wind (Sahih al-Bukhari 1035).
Lessons
- Strength and wealth are gifts from Allah, not reasons for arrogance.
- True courage comes from complete trust (tawakkul) in Allah.
- Seeking forgiveness increases a people in blessing and strength.
- Never feel secure from Allah's plan; the Prophet ﷺ feared even the clouds.
