Prophet Ayyub (AS) – The Model of Patience

Stories of the Prophets

Ayyub (AS) was tested with severe affliction and remained patient, turning to Allah with a humble prayer. Allah cured him, restored his family and called him an excellent servant.

Ayyub (AS) was a prophet from the descendants of Ibrahim (Quran 6:84) whom Allah praised above all for his patience. The Quran tells his story briefly. He called upon his Lord, saying that adversity had touched him and that Allah is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy (Quran 21:83). In another place he said that Shaytan had touched him with hardship and suffering (Quran 38:41). Notice the courtesy of his prayer: he did not complain about Allah or make demands; he simply described his state and praised Allah's mercy.

The Quran does not detail the nature of his illness or how long it lasted. Commentators mention that he had been blessed with wealth, children and good health, lost them all, and suffered a long illness, remaining patient and grateful throughout, while his faithful wife stood by him. Some reports mention that the trial lasted many years; such details come from commentaries and historical reports and should not be treated as certain. The exaggerated descriptions of his body that circulate in popular tellings are not supported by authentic sources, and scholars have rejected them as unbefitting a prophet.

Allah answered his prayer. He told him to strike the ground with his foot, and there was cool water for bathing and for drinking (Quran 38:42). Allah removed his affliction and gave him back his family and the like of them along with them, as a mercy from Allah and a reminder for those who worship Him (Quran 21:84; 38:43). Allah also told him to take a bundle of thin stalks in his hand and strike with it, so as not to break his oath (Quran 38:44). Commentators explain that during his illness he had sworn to punish his wife for something, and Allah, out of mercy for her loyalty, gave him this gentle way to fulfil his oath.

Allah's verdict on him is among the most beautiful in the Quran: He found him patient, an excellent servant, one who constantly turned back to his Lord (Quran 38:44).

The Prophet ﷺ told that while Ayyub was bathing, golden locusts fell upon him and he began gathering them in his garment. His Lord called to him, asking whether He had not made him free of need of what he saw. Ayyub replied that indeed He had, by His might, but he could never be free of need of His blessings (Sahih al-Bukhari 279).

Lessons

  • Patience in hardship raises a believer's rank with Allah.
  • Complain to Allah, not about Allah, and do so with courtesy.
  • Relief from Allah can come suddenly and completely.
  • Even in wealth, a believer never stops needing Allah's blessings.
