How to Perform Wudu (Ablution)

Wudu is the ritual washing required before Salah, touching the Qur'an and performing Tawaf. Allah commands it in Surah al-Ma'idah (5:6), and the Prophet ﷺ said that no prayer is accepted without purification. Follow these steps in order, using clean (pure) water.

1

Intention (Niyyah) نیت

Make the intention in your heart that you are performing wudu to purify yourself for Salah and to please Allah. Saying it aloud is not required.

In the Hanafi school the intention is a Sunnah of wudu; in the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools it is obligatory (fard). Making it is best in every case.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
2

Say Bismillah

Begin by saying Bismillah before you start washing.

Bismillah

Meaning: In the name of Allah.

Many Pakistani books teach 'Bismillahil-'Azim wal-hamdu lillahi 'ala dinil-Islam'; the basic Sunnah is simply 'Bismillah'.
Sunan Abi Dawud 101; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 25
3

Wash both hands

Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, starting with the right hand, and pass water between the fingers.

Sahih al-Bukhari 159
4

Rinse the mouth and use miswak

Take water in your right hand and rinse your mouth thoroughly three times. Use a miswak (or brush the teeth with a finger) at this point if possible.

If you are not fasting, gargle well; when fasting, rinse gently so water does not go down the throat.
Sahih al-Bukhari 159; Sahih al-Bukhari 887 (miswak)
5

Rinse the nose

Sniff water into the nose with the right hand and blow it out with the left hand, three times.

Sahih al-Bukhari 159; Sahih Muslim 226
6

Wash the face

Wash the whole face three times: from the hairline to below the chin, and from one earlobe to the other. Men with a thick beard should run wet fingers through it (khilal).

Washing the face is fard in all schools.
Qur'an 5:6; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 31 (khilal of beard)
7

Wash the arms up to the elbows

Wash the right arm from the fingertips up to and including the elbow three times, then the left arm in the same way. Make sure no spot stays dry; move rings or tight bangles so water reaches beneath.

Nail polish or any waterproof coating prevents water from reaching the nail and must be removed before wudu.
Qur'an 5:6; Sahih al-Bukhari 159
8

Wipe the head (Masah)

Wet both hands and wipe over the head once, from the front to the back of the head and back again to the front.

Hanafi: wiping at least a quarter of the head is fard and wiping the whole head is Sunnah. Shafi'i: wiping any part suffices. Maliki and Hanbali: wiping the whole head is required.
Sahih al-Bukhari 185
9

Wipe the ears (and neck)

With the same wet hands, wipe the inside of the ears with the index fingers and the back of the ears with the thumbs. Many Pakistani books then teach wiping the back of the neck with the backs of the fingers.

Wiping the neck is considered mustahabb by many Hanafi scholars; other schools do not include it. Never wipe the front of the throat.
Sunan an-Nasa'i, Kitab at-Taharah; Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab at-Taharah
10

Wash the feet up to the ankles

Wash the right foot including the ankle three times, passing the little finger of the left hand between the toes, then wash the left foot the same way. Pay attention to the heels.

The Prophet ﷺ warned: 'Woe to the heels from the Fire' for those who leave them dry. Wiping over leather socks (khuffs) is permitted under its conditions.
Sahih al-Bukhari 60; Sahih Muslim 241
11

Dua after wudu

After finishing, look towards the sky (optional) and recite the Shahadah and this dua. The Prophet ﷺ said the eight gates of Paradise are opened for whoever says it.

Allahumma-j'alni minat-tawwabina waj'alni minal-mutatahhirin.

Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.

Sahih Muslim 234; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55

Fard and Sunnah acts of wudu

Hanafi fard (4): wash the face; wash both arms including elbows; wipe a quarter of the head; wash both feet including ankles. Key Sunnahs: intention, Bismillah, washing hands, miswak, rinsing mouth and nose, khilal of beard and fingers, wiping the whole head and ears, washing each part three times, keeping the order, and not pausing until the next part dries.

Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars add intention and sequence as fard; Maliki and Hanbali add continuity (muwalat); Hanbalis also count rinsing mouth and nose as obligatory.
Qur'an 5:6
13

What breaks wudu

According to the Hanafi school, wudu breaks with: (1) anything coming out of the front or back private parts, including urine, stool and wind; (2) blood, pus or fluid flowing beyond the wound; (3) vomiting a mouthful; (4) sleeping while lying down or leaning so that one would fall if the support were removed; (5) fainting, intoxication or insanity; (6) laughing aloud in a Salah that has ruku and sajdah. After any of these, renew wudu before praying.

Other schools differ: Shafi'is and Hanbalis hold that touching one's private part with the palm breaks wudu; Shafi'is also include skin contact with a non-mahram of the opposite sex; Hanbalis include eating camel meat; Shafi'is and Malikis do not consider bleeding or vomiting to break wudu. Doubt alone does not break wudu.
